First of New State-of-the-Art Subway Cars Arrive in NYC for Testing

On July 1, 2021, the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) announced the delivery of the first five R211 subway cars. Qualification testing begins in the next few weeks, with the cars expected to go into service next summer. The new subway cars are part of the MTA’s $6.1 billion investment in rolling stock that’s included in the current capital plan. New features include door spans that are wider to help speed boarding, upgraded digital displays that provide real-time subway service and station information; and eventually, as part of a pilot program, 20 cars of the 535-car full base order will feature an “open gangway” that allows riders to move freely between cars for better passenger distribution.
